Volunteers sought to help build new theater

Scotts Valley Theater Guild is hosting a work day Saturday to demolish a wall and finish a ceiling as part of its construction of a new theater.

Volunteers are asked to bring work gloves and goggles if they have them, as well as cordless drills, crowbars and socket sets. Community service forms for students will be available, and all volunteers must fill out a liability waiver.

Meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at 251 Kings Village Road in Scotts Valley — across from the transit center. Work is expected to continue until about 4 p.m.

Sea Glass Festival fills Cocoanut Grove

The seventh annual Santa Cruz Sea Glass Festival will take over the Cocoanut Grove Saturday and Sunday.

Richard LaMotte, author of “The Lure of Sea Glass” and otherwise known as “sea glass godfather,” will attend the event.

In addition there will be a free raffle with your paid admission and a $1,000 piece prize contest on Sunday.

All weekend you can enter for a chance to win a two-night trip for two to Las Vegas, including airfare, accommodations at Caesars Palace and tickets to see a Celine Dion performance.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Admission is $5 with children age 6 and younger are free.

County wage justice exhibit Thursday

“Working for Dignity, Low-Wage Worker Study of Santa Cruz County” is a display of photos and findings from a year-long research project produced by the UC Santa Cruz Center for Labor Studies.

The study found that low-wage workers in Santa Cruz County earn a median wage of about $10 an hour compared with the county median of $17.81.

The event is at the Community Room, 275 Main St., Watsonville from 6-8 p.m.

It will showcase the project’s website workingfordignity.ucsc.edu/ and feature workers, researchers and students sharing their stories about low pay and wage theft.

Community organizations will also be on hand to discuss new monthly clinics that can help anyone who has been the victim of wage theft.

Albacore Feed fundraiser set Saturday

The nonprofit Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project and the Castroville Rotary Club are having their 38th annual fund-raising albacore dinner on 6 p.m. Nov. 7 Saturday at the Castroville Recreation Center, 11261 Crane St.

There will be door prizes, a raffle and silent auction and a project demonstration.

Tickets are available at the door: $18 for adults, $10 for kids 12 and younger.

Holiday shopping fair set for Saturday

The UCSC Retirees Association and VFW Post No. 5888 are co-hosting a benefit Holiday Shopping Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the SC County Veterans Memorial Building, 856 Front St.

The event’s goal is to help fund the Retirees Association Scholarship program for military veterans studying at UC Santa Cruz.

Artists and crafters will sell unique, handcrafted items and art work and contribute 15 percent of their sales to the scholarship program. All of the sales of items donated to the sponsoring organizations, including three skateboards donated by Santa Cruz Skateboards, will also be contributed to the scholarship fund.

NAMI plans celebration benefit Nov. 12

A celebration and benefit for the National Alliance on Mental Illness will take place 5-7:30 p.m. on Nov. 12, at Community Foundation, 7807 Soquel Drive.

This event includes wine, beer, food, music, a drawing for a Kauai vacation, silent auction, and special guests from offices of Rep. Sam Farr, State Sen. Bill Monning, NAMI California and local leaders.

Admission is $25.

It’s an opportunity to build community connections and celebrate while raising needed funds for vital services for those affected by mental illness.
