WordPress users are invited to test the version 4.4 Beta 2 release in advance of the Dec. 8 full release.
This is software still in development, so resist the urge to run it on a production site. But users can sample what the team has been working on, including Twenty Sixteen, the newest default theme, as well as responsive images and a broader array of embedded content.
The team is also offering a lot of changes for developers, including:
- REST API (phase 1) — The underlying infrastructure of the WordPress REST APIplug-in has been included in WordPress 4.4. Plugin authors can take advantage of this by adding custom endpoints.
- Term Metadata — Taxonomy term metadata is now included in WordPress 4.4. If you’ve already been using a plug-in to implement term metadata, you should readthis post on how to prepare. Also, the underlying
WP_Termclass improves caching when working with terms. (#14162) - Improved
<title>output —wp_title()is now deprecated; WordPress canhandle the rendering of the document title automatically. - Comments — Comment queries are now split for performance. Also, the underlying

To get the beta, try the WordPress Beta Tester plug-in (you’ll want “bleeding edge nightlies”). Or you can download the beta here (zip).
If you think find a bug, the team asks you to can post to the Alpha/Beta area in the support forums. Or, if you’re comfortable writing a bug report, file one on the WordPress Trac, where you can also find a list of known bugs and everything that has already been fixed.
Composite
The Composite C1 source code is on GitHub where users can follow the community's progress and send pull requests if they want to contribute. The community has also released and uploaded to GitHub the 5.0 Beta 1 version of our CMS.
The interface has a new look, is easier to use and runs faster because the team has replaced the elements of the client framework that supported older IE. In addition, tabs are an upgrade on the tree navigation and command buttons.
The editing process, especially the media browsing experience, has become more visual. The browser view in the interface now matches the content node you’ve navigated to as well as data items, media and log views. Users can register media providers to stream media files or return URLs to externally hosted ones, such as on a CDN.
The community has also improved the MVC support, data views for Razor and page testing for different devices. Developers can now use MVC functions to embed controllers and actions in templates or content at a deeper level compared to the MVC player to build and test an app in a pure MVC scenario.
And it's included a selection of view modes for the browser that show how pages render on phones and tablets. The page speed view mode will help identify functions that take too long to execute and link all functions to their representations in the related section of the interface.
Version 5 has dependency injection support on C1 functions and improved data and URL handling.
“We’ve moved a few big elements around,” said Marcus Wendt. “It’s our third major release since we became open-source five years ago and a big leap towards an enterprise-grade CMS solution.”

eZ Systems
There's something new about eZ Systems: The beta of eZ's next generation content management solutions, eZ Platform and eZ Studio. For the record, eZ Platform is an open source project and eZ Studio is not (read more here).
The community will be celebrating and discussing what the new release means at the 2015 eZ Content Technology Conference in Brooklyn, N.Y. tomorrow through Thursday. You can prove your skills at the conference and become eZ Publish 5.4 certified, and get smart with keynote speakers Karen McGrane, Paul Boag and Deane Barker. You can also attend workshops led by Boag and Symfony developer Bernhard Schussek.
This year’s eZ Awards will be presented at the end of the conference. Categories include Partner of the Year (nominees: Ixonos, Novative SQLI) and Blogger of the Year (Peter Keung, Ivo Lukac and Jani Tarvainen). A full list of the nominees is available here.

Joomla
Joomla is looking for testers for the upcoming Joomla 3.5 release. Features in the new release include:
- An update email plug-in
- Router improvements
- Plugin to gather basic anonymized data as an opt-out feature
- More site and admin links to Module User Status
- The ability to add a user CSS file to Protostar
- Download system/environment information
- TinyMCE drag and drop images
The first beta release is expected this Wednesday. The second beta release will be on Nov. 11. On Nov. 18, the release candidate will be offered and on Dec. 1, the stable version will be released.Joomla 3.4.5 Released
Meanwhile, the community issued a high priority release for the 3.x series of Joomla which addresses a critical security vulnerability. Community members "strongly recommend" that you update your sites immediately. This release only contains the security fixes; no other changes have been made compared to the Joomla 3.4.4 release.

This Joomla World Conference 2015 will be held Nov. 6 to 8 in Bangalore, India. The event brings together Joomla’s global community for a conference of learning, sharing, collaborating and strategic planning.
The theme for 2015 is a celebration of Joomla's 10 years as a CMS. Attendees will meet Joomla experts, hear great lectures by top technology leaders and learn everything you wanted to know about Joomla, one of the top content management systems and web application platforms available.

Magnolia
Magnolia launched its new blogging platform, where staff and guest bloggers will write about the product, development, digital marketing and design. You can get some background on this project here.
The community has been active in a number of events: Part of the Magnolia team spent a week at GITEX last month in Dubai, where the community co-exhibited with its partner Tinext:
This month, it's one of the sponsoris of NetComm Suisse’s e-commerce conference, which will be held n Basel, Switzerland on November 25. And its already looking ahead to the 2016 Magnolia conferences on May 10 to 12 in California and from June 7 to 9 in Basel, Switzerland.
Magnolia CVO Boris Kraft published an article in CMSWire this month that explained tactics won’t get you very far with digital transformation. He also wrote a piece for digital marketing magazine, exploring the challenges and opportunities of the digital age.
The community ran a webinar on multichannel content management, presented by our CIO Jan Haderka and Adriaan Bloem, Senior Manager Online at MBC. The recording and the slides are available here. In the next webinar, Tomas Gregovsky, senior front end developer, will show the audience how to create modern, responsive sites with Magnolia.

Orchard
Orchard had its Harvest conference last month in Alicante, Spain. Videos for all the talks are online here.
On Oct. 15, Orchard 1.9.2 was released. It features new “manage own media” and “layout management” permissions, local cloud debugging, and new content filters, as well as bug fixes. You can check out the release notes here.
SilverStripe
The SilverStripe 3.2 stable release is now available.There are a few large features designed to bring maximum benefit to SilverStripe developers, including:
- New batch actions and tools for managing multiple pages
- A new parameterised database ORM to prevent SQL injection
- New standard support for PDO
- Modularised reports and siteconfig components
SilverStripe has also released SilverStripe Module Standard 1.0 — a set of conventions that high-quality modules should follow. A subset of modules is commercially supported by SilverStripe Ltd with a dedicated team of developers actively maintaining them. This is a pioneering step for an open source project to show a consistent quality approach to provide peace of mind and confidence to users.
The second StripeCon – the SilverStripe European Conference was held on Oct. 16 and 17 in London. More than 70 attendees gathered to network, hear talks on web development, share ideas and demo their work. The conference was a free event, run by members from SilverStripe’s European community. Videos of these talks are available on the SilverStripe Vimeo channel.
