A 27-year-old motorcyclist died after crashing into a fire hydrant in Pico Rivera Sunday afternoon.

At about 4:25 p.m., the motorcyclist, identified by the coroner’s office as Hashem Muwanas, was riding northbound on Passons Boulevard in the area of Loch Avon Drive alongside his brother when he drifted too far to the right and clipped the curb, sheriff’s Pico Rivera station authorities said.

Muwanas was then thrown from his bike into a nearby fire hydrant. He was transported to St. Francis Medical Center where he succumbed to chest injuries and was pronounced dead.

It is unclear what caused Muwanas to drift, authorities said. He was traveling at about 20 miles per hour at the time of the crash.

No further information was available.
