There is a possibility that Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs) could become the WBC middleweight champion by default.

Golovkin became the WBC's interim champion after stopping Marco Antonio Rubio last year in two rounds.

The win over Rubio made him the mandatory challenger to WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto.

The sanctioned body allowed Cotto to bypass Golovkin, twice. Cotto was allowed to make a voluntary defense against Daniel Geale in June.  They allowed another voluntary defense, against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on November 21. The fight with Canelo came with a price - with the sanctioning body ordering the winner to fight Golovkin next.

"The only way to avoid a confrontation with Triple G, is if all of the involved parties signed an agreement in which they agree on another solution. But the WBC's opinion is clear, the winner of the November 21 has to face Golovkin," firmly stated WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman.

If the winner of Cotto-Canelo decides to go in another direction, without the consent of Golovkin's team and the WBC, they would have to vacate the title or the sanctioning body will strip them. In either situation, the WBC states, according to their rules, Golovkin would be elevated to the status of full champion.

Golovkin already owns the WBA/IBF/IBO world titles and wants to capture the WBC/WBO belts before a move is considered to 168-pounds.
