Arizona State's undefeated season is over, and so is Macey Gardner's college career.
An MRI on Monday confirmed Gardner tore the ACL in her left knee Friday in the Sun Devils' loss to Washington. Gardner also suffered a torn meniscus and an MCL strain. She watched on crutches as Arizona State (15-2) fell to Washington State on Sunday.
Gardner was attempting a kill in the second set Friday when she collapsed and was helped off the court by trainers.
The senior outside hitter from Gilbert, Arizona, became the school's all-time kills leader Oct. 4 in the Sun Devils' game against Cal. She surpassed the old mark of 1,871, held by Christine Garner (1992-95). Gardner compiled 1,882 in her career.
Gardner was a key contributor to Arizona State's climb back to the NCAA tournament. The Sun Devils made only four postseason appearances between 1996 and 2011, but they made it into the field each of the past three seasons and were one of three undefeated teams in the nation prior to Friday's loss.
With Gardner out, freshman outside hitter Lexi MacLean made her first collegiate appearance Sunday and contributed eight kills and 10 digs against the Cougars.
The Sun Devils dropped five spots to No. 10 in Monday's American Volleyball Coaches Association poll.
