Ouachita Parish Sheriff Jay Russell wins his race unopposed.

He said that he appreciates the public's support and credited his staff with helping to make their home safe.

"I'm humbled and appreciative," he said.

Russell was the only candidate left in the race after his opponent, Clint Thomas, was found dead over the weekend.

Thomas' body was discovered at his home Saturday morning. He had previously run for Monroe mayor five times, but he was best known as a comic bookstore owner.

Russell said the ballot was "unorthodox" because of his opponent's death. Qualifying for the race reopened from Monday through Wednesday, but no one stepped forward.

Clerk of Court Louise Bond said the Secretary of State's Office will cancel the election. If still on the ballot, any votes in the cancelled race will not count.
