5 things you need to know Tuesday

Editors
USA TODAY
McDonald's is offering an all-day breakfast menu beginning Oct. 6.

1. All-day breakfast at McDonald's is here

Hashbrown + Big Mac? Sure, you can do that. Beginning Tuesday, McDonald's will roll out an all-day breakfast menu, which includes a lot, but not all, of their morning breakfast items. But there's a possible consequence to this otherwise happy news: some of the non-breakfast menu items will be cut for operational reasons (it all comes down to space and time). Just what gets cut will vary market-to-market.

2. Obama to address Pacific trade deal

Obama will meet with business leaders Tuesday at the Department of Agriculture to talk about a proposed trade deal involving the United States and 11 other Pacific Rim countries. Critics say that the deal will lead to the export of American jobs overseas, while White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the deal will expand access to overseas markets for American products. Tuesday's meeting is part of Obama's new long-term sales project in the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

3. The end of the rain is just the beginning of South Carolina's recovery

Sunshine is expected in South Carolina on Tuesday after days of historic rains that brought catastrophic flooding and killed at least 10 people. But with the end of the rain South Carolina must begin to deal with the destruction left in the water's wake. There are roads that have entire chunks missing, cars that floated and settled into the middle of some streets, trees that toppled onto homes and bridges that have disappeared, to name just some of the problems facing the state. "This is not over. Just because the rain stops does not mean that we are out of the woods," Gov. Nikki Haley said.

4. Windows 10 may be coming to smartphones

Rumor has it that Microsoft will announce the first smartphones to run Windows 10, extending some of the key benefits of the operating system to mobile phones (think: iris scans and seamless device-to-device computing experiences). The tech titian may unveil an updated version of the Surface Pro tablet, along with two new versions of its Lumia smartphone. Also on tap at the Microsoft event is more information on HoloLens, the augmented reality headset Microsoft is developing. The event will begin at 10 a.m. ET Tuesday in New York City, and it can be streamed online or on Xbox.

5. MLB playoffs begin with a fairy tale

Tuesday's away game is actually the perfect setting for the Houston Astro's Cinderella story. The Astros have an opportunity to defeat the mighty New York Yankees at home when they open Major League Baseball's playoff season with their first appearance in 10 years. "Hopefully, they'll be making a movie about this one day," says Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow. For the Yankees, this is their first playoff appearance without the now-retired Derek Jeter. They're also down CC Sabathia, who announced Monday he's entering rehab for alcoholism. It's impossible to predict what will happen, but we're betting on some reckless and incalculable randomness.

And the essentials:

Weather: The Southeast will get a break from the recent storms while the Southwest sees some rain and thunderstorms.

Stocks: U.S. stock futures were lower Tuesday, as investors were buoyed by the prospect that the Federal Reserve will wait until next year to raise interest rates.

TV tonight: Wondering what to watch tonight? TV critic Robert Bianco looks at Flash, Grinder and iZombie.
