Under the Carven Sea

Carven’s designers and recently named creative directors Adrien Caillaudaud and Alexis Martial constructed a narrative arc rather than a collection of designs for the label’s Spring/Summer ’16 presentation. They told Vogue they were inspired by the story of a young woman on the hunt for an adventure who takes up scuba diving during a trip to the beach before returning to the city once more. The journey was clearly in motion during the runway show; early looks were more nautical than submarine in bright reds, whites, and blues, sailor collars, and oversized shirt dresses. As the progression moved under the ocean’s surface, the looks took the purported inspiration literally: shirts were adorned with patterns of underwater sea life that brought to mind barnacles and coral formations. In the show’s final movement, the Carven woman emerged anew from the ocean, dressed in sleek, scuba-inspired garments (and one sweatshirt with the image of a diver emblazoned across the front).
