THE governors of Goostrey School have recognised the importance of pupils getting involved in the community by introducing two new prestigious awards.

Each year the governors will present an individual and group award to the children who have done most to enhance community life.

The first inaugural individual award is shared by Jack and Harry Tunmore, in years one and four, whose charity work has seen them help raise a total of £1,000 for St Luke’s Hospice and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Year 3 were the first class to receive the group award for their community singing both in school and in the village.

Goostrey residents were invited in for singing and a cup of tea, with the pupils on several occasions.

The children also took the singing into the village, performing in the Bongs and at Mount Pleasant Home.

Headteacher Lyndsey Atkins said: “Goostrey School is very much at the heart of our community and so it is really important that the children understand the part they can play in village life.

“I was delighted when the governors decided to instigate the awards, which I think are unique in this area, and was pleased with the number of nominations we received.”
