Justin Bieber released "What Do You Mean?" to great fanfare Friday morning.

The 21-year-old singer, who will perform the song for the first time live at the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday, made the song available via Apple Music and Spotify. The lyric video, directed by Laban, shows Bieber skateboarding along with Ryan Sheckler and Chelsea Castro. The track is the first single from Bieber's upcoming album, his first since 2013's compilation album Journals and 2012's Believe.

"What do you mean? / When you nod your head yes / But you wanna say no / What do you mean?" the pop star sings in the chorus. "When you don't want me to move / But you tell me to go / What do you mean? / Said we're running out of time, what are you mean? / Better make up your mind / What do you mean?"

To hype the single, Bieber asked dozens of stars to join him in an Instagram countdown; Alec Baldwin, Big Sean, Luke Bryan, James Corden, Miley Cyrus, Hilary Duff, Florida Georgia Line, Ariana Grande, Savannah Guthrie, Gigi Hadid, Kevin Hart, Kendall Jenner, Matt Lauer, Ruby Rose, Skrillex, Britney Spears, Martha Stewart, Ben Stiller, Steven Tyler and Mark Wahlberg participated.

After the song was released, Beliebers went nuts:

NEWS: Justin Bieber explains how he's learned from his past mistakes

"'What Do You Mean?' is an up-tempo song," he tells Radio.com. "It's actually perfect for summer, even though summer's just ending. I had the best time recording it; I had the best time recording my album."

Bieber says his album will be out "soon."

"I've been working on this thing for three years. I've been trying to figure out the sound. I've been going through phases of doing R&B music, and then really hard hip-hop based music, and now I'm in a place of wanting to really bring all those things together to make one cohesive sound. But it's always weird when people start describing the music that they make. [Other artists and bands will say,] 'It's 'different,'" he explains. "But my s--t is really different."

Bieber will perform "What Do You Mean?" on NBC's Today Sept. 10.
