90-year-old Man Rescues Wife from Fire, Credits God

A 90-year-old man recently saved his 89-year-old, wheelchair-bound wife from a house fire, and credits God for his strength to do so.

Arthur Schneider of Asheboro, North Carolina was in his bedroom taking care of his wife, Rosemary Schneider, last Thursday when a bolt of lightning struck a transformer near their house and ignited a fire.

As smoke began coming from the kitchen, Mr. Schneider knew he had to get himself and his wife to safety. He wheeled his wife out the front door, but could not bring her wheelchair any farther because of the front porch steps.

So, without his cane, Schneider ran to his neighbor’s house for help, about a football-field’s distance from his own home.

"I guess God gives us a little strength when we need it," Schneider said, according to Christian Today, adding that he did not know how else he could have ran such a distance so quickly without his cane to support him.

With the help of their neighbor, both Rosemary and Arthur were able to get to safety before the firemen came.

Bernadette Such, one of Arthur and Rosemary’s nine children, said that her father faithfully cares for her mother who suffers from Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

The Schneiders met through Arthur’s cousin, and Rosemary wrote him letters while he was serving in World War II. In October, they will celebrate their 69th wedding anniversary.

"They're just two people who love each other very much," Such said.
