John Oliver Dedicates Main Segment to DC Statehood

"Let them have gun laws! Let them have weed! Let them decide the things that they need!"

Voting rights inequities have been a major theme throughout the current season of Last Week Tonight.

In previous weeks, John Oliver explored lack of representation among U.S. territories — such as Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico — and on Sunday’s show, the host of LWT dedicated a 17-minute segment to a topic close to home for Washingtonians: DC statehood.

At one point in story, Oliver illustrates how the practical power of DC Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton is equal to that of “a child watching Dora the Explorer.”

“It’s like Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, except she was already in Washington and doesn’t have the power to do anything,” said Oliver after playing a clip of the Congresswoman’s impassioned speech on the floor of the House.
