Fayetteville Man Dies in Fatal Scooter Accident

When Results Matter Most, Hire a Heavyweight

A 57-year-old Fayetteville man was fatally injured when his moped came into contact with a service truck. Investigators reported that the accident occurred after the moped driver crashed his vehicle into a service truck while it was stopped in traffic. The driver of the truck was not injured.

As transportation by mopeds and scooters become increasingly popular in the United States, drivers must be aware of the increased risk associated with these vehicles. Unlike a car or truck, scooters and mopeds do not offer enclosed protection. This lack of protection leaves drivers especially vulnerable should an accident occur.

If you drive a moped or scooter, simple ways to prevent potential accidents and injuries include always wearing a helmet, maintaining appropriate speeds, wearing easily visible and reflective clothing, staying aware of your surroundings and avoiding other drivers’ blind spots. It is also wise to be extra cautious when completing a left-hand turn, as this is a common cause of scooter and moped accidents.

Most importantly, moped and scooter drivers should always refrain from driving under the influence. Recently, the American College of Surgeons released a study, which found that 39 percent of moped drivers with accident-related injuries had blood-alcohol levels above .05 percent. This figure is more than one and a half times greater than the number of motorcycle and car drivers who operate their vehicle under the influence.

Researchers learned that many of the individuals involved in the accidents previously had their driver’s license suspended, and chose to drive a moped because many states allow these vehicles to be driven without a driver’s license. The increased risks associated with mopeds and scooters make it essential that drivers consider safety a top priority, and do not drive under the influence.
