Marlene Abraham of West Monroe, the mother of 5th District U.S. Rep. Ralph Abraham, died Tuesday. She was 83.

Abraham was a retired teacher.

“Congressman Abraham, his wife, Dianne, and his family are mourning the loss of Dr. Abraham’s mother,” said Cole Avery, a spokesman for the congressman. “She will be remembered as a community leader and an educator who touched the lives of many people.

“Dr. Abraham and his family greatly appreciate all the thoughts and prayers from concerned people throughout the district. I know it means a lot to them as they cope with this loss.”

Abraham is scheduled to fly from Washington to Monroe tonight.

The funeral is scheduled at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Mulhearn Funeral Home chapel in West Monroe. Visitation is scheduled at 10 a.m. Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, Abraham, R-Alto, is asking donations be made to Pilots for Patients, a charity organization he’s involved with that flies sick patients with financial needs to specialty hospitals.
