NIS 360m. program to protect Israel's coast receives preliminary approval

The Environmental Protection Ministry's eight-year, NIS 360 million program to protect the nation's coastal cliffs received the approval of the Socioeconomic Cabinet on Monday, the ministry announced the following day.

Assuming the program goes on to receive full government approval, the Mediterranean Coastal Cliffs Preservation Government Company Ltd. will be able to work with local authorities to erect defenses to bolster cliffs in danger of collapse.

Every year, the ministry said, the country's coastal cliffs lose about 40-50 centimeters due to erosion. The cliffs, made of kurkar limestone, stretch about 45 kilometers between Ashkelon and Hadera. The risk of collapse pose an immediate danger to both property and human life, the ministry stressed.

"Our challenge is to implement defenses quickly and effectively while maintaining the beaches," said Environmental Protection Minister Avi Gabbay.
