WR Javon McKinley has six schools standing out

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. -- In a deep year for wide receiver talent in California, Javon McKinley is one of the more coveted prospects in the region.

The 6-foot-2, 189-pound receiver of Corona, California, holds scholarship offers from some of the top programs in the country but is now down to his top six.

Local programs UCLA and USC have been in the mix since the beginning and will likely receive unofficial visits from McKinley, but the big receiver already has four official visits set to programs outside state lines.

Ohio State will have McKinley on campus in late September; Tennessee and Notre Dame -- for its game against USC -- will host the receiver in October; and Oregon will get its chance in November.

McKinley confirmed that those are his top six programs, but that he hadn’t yet thought about which program will receive his fifth official visit.

While McKinley has visited several of his finalists, the first time he sees Ohio State and Tennessee will be during his official visits.

“With the schools I haven’t visited, what has to click is: Do I like how I interact with the players and coaches? And then the whole environment,” McKinley said. “Can I see myself there for four years?”

USC will be an interesting program to watch as it chases McKinley. The Trojans will take at least four wide receivers in this class but already have commitments from Velus Jones, Michael Pittman and Josh Imatorbhebhe. That leaves potentially just one remaining spot for a receiver, though the Trojans could eventually find room for another body at the position or bring someone in with the idea of working him out at multiple spots.

“They haven’t talked to me about what spots are left, but they did talk to me about the situation that they’re filling up on receivers right now,” McKinley said. “They said they still want me.”

At this point, McKinley is planning to announce his commitment at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl but said there’s also a chance that something could change his mind and trigger an earlier commitment.
