Toledo-Lucas County Public Library
Under the supervision of the Local History & Genealogy Manager, works to cultivate collections of specialized materials with specific focus on local and regional history. Is responsible for the design and implementation of innovative library services and instruction programs that enhance access to and understanding of a broad range of rare book, manuscript, archival, and digital materials. Serves as a liaison to community organizations and members to share expertise.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Leads the acquisition, sourcing, and negotiating, for purchases of specialized materials.
- Identifies uniqueness within specialized material collections. Works with digitization staff to make items accessible to customers in digital formats.
- Collaborates with colleagues working in areas of collection development, archival and manuscript processing, rare book cataloging, preservation, and digitization.
- Assesses value and recommends preservation/conservation for collection items and items being considered for acquisition. Makes de-selection decisions for the library’s special collections.
- Acts as contact person to local collectors, national and international rare book dealers, and auction houses.
- Spearheads enhanced accessibility and publicity of collections with physical displays, guided tours, special showings and digital conversion as appropriate. Develops, builds, and leads special programming.
- Works with local groups to encourage scholarly study and broader general appreciation of materials in the collection.
- Works with Director and Local History & Genealogy Manager to define collection scope, formalize and execute collection expansion plan.
- Has purchasing authority within a defined budget.
- Maintains a course of personal professional development through active participation in rare book, manuscript, and archives professional associations or other professional activities.
- Serves as a professional librarian and performs other duties as assigned for the efficient operation of the agency and the library system.
