Police arrested two brothers for allegedly trying to kill a neighbor with a baseball bat during a fight Monday.

Sgt. Jerry Johnson said the 52-year-old victim suffered bumps, bruises and welts and was taken by family to a hospital. He didn’t know if the man had additional injuries.

A loaded handgun was found on one of the suspects, as were methamphetamines and a bat in their apartment.

Johnson said 36-year-old Alfonso Esparza and the neighbor got into a fistfight in the 1500 block of West Front Street around 8:30 a.m. Monday, but no information was available on what started the dispute.

Esparza’s 33-year-old brother, Daniel, also got involved in the fight.

Johnson said one of the brothers allegedly hit the neighbor with an aluminum baseball bat multiple times. During the fight, the neighbor said he heard one of the suspects say they should kill him.

After the victim called the police, an officer was talking to the neighbor and taking down a report when the suspects were spotted in the driveway of the apartment building.

Police detained the two without incident. Johnson said officers found a handgun in the pocket of Daniel Esparza. Detectives served a search warrant at the apartment on Monday afternoon and recovered a bat and some methamphetamines.

The Esparzas were taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder. Daniel Esparza was also arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of methamphetamines.

Booking records show the two are being held at the Alhambra jail. Bail is $30,000 for Alfonso Esparza and $35,000 for Daniel. Arraignment for both is scheduled for Wednesday at Alhambra Superior Court.
