Mick McCarthy suggests Jonathan Parr will take Tyrone Mings's Ipswich Town spot

Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy hints that Jonathan Parr will be the man to step up at left-back after the sale of Tyrone Mings to Bournemouth.

Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy has hinted that he does not need to sign a new left-back following the sale of Tyrone Mings to Bournemouth.

Mings, who joined Ipswich from non-League Chippenham Town for £10,000 in 2012, signed for the newly-promoted Cherries in a deal reported to be worth £8m, with Brett Pitman and Ryan Fraser moving the other way.

McCarthy believes that former Crystal Palace defender Jonathan Parr can step up and take Mings's place in the Tractor Boys' backline.

Speaking to reporters on the Blues' first day back in training, McCarthy said: "We've done great out of it in terms of the money that will help us rebuild - we took two really good players in Brett Pitman and Ryan Fraser that will make us a stronger squad.

"Yes, we've lost a really good left-back but we signed Jonathan Parr for left-back last year and only the fact that Tyrone Mings ended up being the best left-back in the league and has gone to Bournemouth in the Premier League kept him out."

It is the second summer in a row that Ipswich have lost their first-choice left-back, after Aaron Cresswell signed for West Ham United and went on to play every minute in the Premier League last season - one of only five players to do so.

"Having spent next to nothing on [Mings] and getting the money that we did was a remarkable deal for a Championship left-back," added McCarthy.

"If he does as well as Cressy did - he won every Player of the Year award at West Ham - it will be great for him as well. Bournemouth have got a good deal."

Ipswich finished sixth in the Championship last season and were beaten in the playoff semi-finals by East Anglian rivals Norwich City, who went on to achieve promotion by overcoming Middlesbrough at Wembley last month.
