The animated sequel doesn’t hit theaters until January, but Father’s Day is this weekend, so it’s appropriate that the first official trailer for Kung Fu Panda 3 emphasizes the first meeting between Jack Black‘s titular martial arts expert Po and his biological father Li, voiced by Bryan Cranston. See how two utterly polite and utterly clueless people fail to recognize they’re actually talking about each other. Meanwhile, and I realize how dated this reference is, the opening segment really reminds me of a scene in Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins. Maybe for Kung Fu Panda 4, Fred Ward can be cast as Po’s grandfather.
Along with Jack Black and Bryan Cranston, Kung Fu Panda 3 stars Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross, Rebel Wilson, J.K. Simmons, James Hong and Randall Duk Kim. From 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks, it’s directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson and Alessandro Carloni from a script by Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger and produced by Melissa Cobb. Kung Fu Panda 3 hits theaters on January 29.
