I have viewed "The Shipping News" several years ago, and having highly enjoyed it, I bought it here on eBay. This is a movie with stunning cinematography, a great music score, and some important messages about life, with some humorous moments thrown into the mix. The plot is about a man by the name of Quoyle, whose life takes a sudden, unexpected turn with the deaths of his wife, mother, and father. Returning to his ancestral roots in Newfoundland, he must come to terms with his family history, face his personal fears, and start a new life there with his young daughter. This film could be compared to "Waking Ned Devine," but it is somewhat less dominated by humor and focuses more on its plot, character development, and themes. For someone who has visited and enjoyed Newfoundland or Nova Scotia (as I have), this film would be worth viewing for the scenery alone.Read full review
He is afraid of water, women, his father, car accidents, and his new career. But he will have to overcome all of that if he wants to survive in an environment unknown to him and all he knows about the weather. Under the leadership of his aunt, Quoyle returns to the place of his ancestors; Newfoundland. It is May, and there is snow on the ground. She directs him to the house in which she was raised but has been unoccupied since before he was born. She assures him it is all "fixable" as she has to confront the memories which haunt her. Quoyle soon learns about the curse, the "ghost", and many truths which he must explore, whether he likes it or not. He is portrayed by Kevin Spacey, who is very convincing as this conquering hero. Overlooked by the Oscars, "The Shipping News" is based on the namesake Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Annie Proulx. It is a classic too good for Hollywood.Read full review
The Shipping News is about a man who hates life, his father, and many other things that play into. He has a daughter with his wife, Bunny, but she isn't really neither a good wife or a mother to their daughter either. Tragedy struck early in the movie which caused Quoyle, and his daughter to go live in Canada with a relative. Throughout the movie one by one Quoyle finds redemption in his life where he thought he was lost completely. And in the end old curses are stripped and new life begins. It is a larger than life tale, and it is a great movie showing that redemption can be found, even in the small things. Can't miss this classic!
Except for sex scenes this would be great for a family to discuss the human relationships presented of family, of co-workers, of employee/boss one on ones. And, it blends historical fact that many probably did not know occured. It is a Good+ Adult movie.

Wonderfully written story with beautiful scenery of Newfoundland. Stacey and Moore are perfect in their parts. Thoroughly enjoyable drama a little slow in the beginning but builds as more of the inner-characters are revealed. Newfoundland's folk/rock/pop group "Great Big Sea" has background songs included - wish they had been more pronounced as I love their traditional music. The slow pace, the rocks and the sea make for an inviting place in this hectic world.
