Meet Greg Hilburn: Business and politics reporter

USA TODAY Network

I come from a journalism family.

My dad, Wiley Hilburn Jr., was a well-known columnist for The News-Star and Shreveport Times and the longtime head of the journalism department at Louisiana Tech University. My uncle, Chet Hilburn, retired from a long career in the newspaper business that he completed at the Houston Chronicle.

But it wasn’t ordained that I would become a reporter as well. I never showed interest in the career during high school but decided to try journalism at Louisiana Tech University, where I eventually graduated, because I had no idea what my path would be.

It’s a path I’ve never left.

I’ve always loved the reporting part of my job more than the writing, whether it was covering sports when I began or the political and economic landscape I cover today.

I’m interested in the things people tell me, and I’m surprised almost every day. Nothing thrills me more than telling readers something they don’t know and wouldn’t have received from another source. That’s what we do, and that’s why we remain relevant.

The industry has changed dramatically during my three decades in the business through technology, but one thing hasn’t changed. Readers want to be informed, whether it be through traditional print or through social and digital platforms. That’s something I hope I can continue to do for years to come.
