UCLA, LSU, Louisville cruise to open NCAA baseball regionals

James Kaprielian threw seven strong innings, and Kevin Kramer had three hits and scored twice to lead No. 1 overall seed UCLA to a 7-2 victory over CSU Bakersfield in the Los Angeles Regional on Friday night.

Luke Persico and Christoph Bono had two hits and two RBIs apiece to help UCLA (43-14) into a winner's bracket game against Maryland (40-21) on Saturday. CSU Bakersfield (36-23-1) will take on Mississippi in an elimination game.

Kaprielian (10-4), a possible first-round pick in the baseball draft next month, gave up two runs and five hits while striking out six.

Chance Gusbeth homered for Bakersfield (36-23-1), making its first NCAA tournament appearance. James Barragan (7-5) gave up eight hits and four earned runs, and left after being struck in the right side by a line drive in the sixth. He was able to throw the batter out after being hit.

LSU 10, Lehigh 3

LSU set a school record with eight stolen bases, and Kade Scivicque and Chris Sciambra each drove in two runs to defeat Lehigh 10-3 in the first round of the Baton Rouge Regional on Friday night.

Alex Bregman, Jared Foster and Andrew Stevenson each had two stolen bases for LSU (49-10). Hunter Newman (3-0) pitched one inning of relief for the win.

LSU, the No. 2 overall national seed in the NCAA tournament, tied it at 2 in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout by Danny Zardon and a wild pitch that scored Chris Chinea. LSU took the lead for good in the fifth on an RBI single by Scivicque.

Reliever Kevin Boswick (3-4) allowed four runs in 1 1/3 innings in the loss for Lehigh (49-10), the Patriot League champion.

The game was delayed in the middle of the first for 2 hours, 17 minutes because of rain.

Louisville 7, Morehead State 2

Freshman Devin Hairston had four hits to lead Louisville to a 7-2 win over Morehead State in the first round of the Louisville Regional on Friday night.

Hairston -- the No. 8 hitter, who entered with a .186 batting average -- had two singles, two doubles and an RBI and scored twice for the Cardinals (44-16), the tournament's No. 3 overall seed.

Logan Taylor added two RBIs for Louisville. Cardinals ace Kyle Funkhouser (8-5) shut down the high-powered offense of the Eagles (38-21), who came in leading Division I in five major offensive categories. The junior right-hander gave up two runs and six hits, walked one, and struck out six in seven innings.

Luke Humphreys (7-3) gave up five runs -- three earned -- and seven hits in six innings. Kane Sweeney hit a solo home run in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth for Morehead State.

Miami 6, Florida International 2

David Thompson, the NCAA leader in RBIs, drove in three more runs, and Miami beat Florida International 6-2 in the first round of the Coral Gables Regional on Friday night.

The host Hurricanes (45-14) scored six runs in the first two innings against Andres Nunez (6-6) to seize control of the first matchup between the crosstown rivals since 2008.

Miami took a 4-0 lead in the first against FIU (29-30) on two hits and two errors. After Ricky Eusebio scored on a throwing error, Thompson smacked a two-run double for a 3-0 lead. He later scored on Willie Abreu's groundout.

George Iskenderian's sacrifice fly in the second padded the lead. Thompson, who entered with 80 RBIs, hit a run-scoring single to tie Mike Fiore for the fourth-most in Hurricanes history.

Andrew Suarez (8-1) allowed two runs and seven hits with five strikeouts in seven-plus innings for Miami.

TCU 10, Sacred Heart 0

Cody Jones hit a leadoff home run, and TCU cruised to a 10-0 victory over Sacred Heart in the opening round of the Fort Worth Regional on Friday night.

Jones scored twice and was one of seven players who drove in at least a run for TCU (44-11). The Horned Frogs scored three runs in the third, clearing the bases after three straight walks. Two two-out singles added two more runs for TCU in the fifth for a 6-0 lead.

Mitchell Traver (8-2) allowed four hits and struck out seven in seven innings, Derek Odell finished with three RBIs and Jeremie Fagnan scored three runs for TCU.

James Cooksey (7-3) gave up four runs in four innings for the Pioneers (23-31-1), who combined to walk 10.

TCU will take on North Carolina State in the winners' bracket Saturday, while Sacred Heart will play Stony Brook in an elimination game.

Florida 19, Florida A&M 0

JJ Schwarz homered and finished with four hits and five RBIs in Florida's 19-0 victory over Florida A&M on Friday night in their NCAA regional opener.

Logan Shore (8-6) pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits.

The Gators (45-16) will face South Florida on Saturday. South Florida beat Florida Atlantic 5-3.

The Rattlers' Ricky Page (2-1) allowed six runs and five hits in two innings. Florida A&M (23-24) was shut out for the first time since March 22.
