NCAA Tournament: Oregon Falls to Iowa 3-1

The Oregon Ducks started their road to Omaha taking on Iowa in Springfield Missouri on Friday. Oregon Starter Cole Irvin would get through the first inning without any trouble, but would be a the reason for the first Iowa run in the second.

Irvin hit Haweyes Shortstop Nick Roscetti and after picking up an out and walking the second batter in the inning Third Baseman Nick Day would single to score Roscetti. Oregon would counter with Mark Karaviotis scoring in the third, but the Hawkeyes would take the lead back in the bottom of the inning and add an additional run in the bottom of the fifth.

Irvin’s day would be complete after five innings and would give up just two hits in his first two innings without letting a run cross the plate. Oregon would find two men on base in the eighth.

Austin Grebeck and Phil Craig-St. Louis would get on base after being hit by a pitch. with two outs in the inning. Scott Heineman would come to the plate with an opportunity to get Oregon back in the game, he would single loading the bases. Brandon Cuddy would then come in and pop out to end the inning. Before the Ducks had a chance in the top of the ninth there was a rain delay.

Oregon had two quick strikouts to start the top of the ninth before Mark Karaviotis and Jakob Goldfarb had back to back singles. Austin Grebeck would fly out to end the game.

The Ducks had chances, but were not able to capitalize. They would fall 3-1 to Iowa.

With the loss, Oregon will have some work to do. They will first face the loser of the Canisius or Missouri State matchup following their game on Friday. Gametime is set for Saturday at 11am Pacific Time.
