Special to The News-Star

At 4 a.m. Sunday officers from the University of Louisiana at Monroe Police Department were on a routine traffic stop at 104 South College Ave., according to a statement from the university.

While communicating with the vehicle’s occupants, officers heard a gunshot and ricochet nearby. The vehicle’s occupants were instructed to duck inside the vehicle for cover as officers investigated the shooting. They reportedly discovered Shankieth Bradford in the 3600 block of Armand Street along with a spent .40 caliber shell casing.

A subsequent investigation yielded Bradford’s arrest and the recovery of a Smith & Wesson firearm. Bradford reportedly confessed to shooting the firearm toward UPD officers while they were conducting the traffic stop.

Bradford was booked into the Ouachita Parish Correctional Center on a charge of aggravated assault on a police officer with a firearm.

The officers and vehicle occupants were uninjured.
