ARLINGTON — Lynnwood senior Monica Kwong became the District 1 singles champion after she defeated Glacier Peak sophomore Madeline Mahler 6-4, 6-1 in the 3A Girls District Tennis Tournament on Wednesday. Along with Kwong, Mahler and Marysville Getchell junior Marina Ciferri qualified to play in the state tournament.
In doubles, the Edmonds-Woodway pairing of seniors Myint-Zu Kyaw and Hanna Rehnfeldt became District 1 champions following their 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5) match win against the Mountlake Terrace duo consisting of senior Nicki Bouche and junior Tina Liu. Ferndale seniors Carly Bannerman and Shelby Slaughter won the third-place match and will join Kyaw-Rehnfeldt and Bouche-Liu in doubles teams advacing to the state tournament.
