The San Bernardino County Fire Department is getting the word out about Wildfire Awareness Week.

The department urged residents to have a plan in place in the event of a wildfire during a Monday morning news conference in Wrightwood.

Wrightwood was selected because of its “highly active fire safe council and responsible citizens” according to Jeff Allen, spokesman for the San Bernardino County Fire Department.

“What we’re trying to do is bring more awareness to the fire season this year,” said Tracey Martinez, spokeswoman for the San Bernardino Fire Department. “This drought is causing an issue but we did have enough rain over the winter and the early spring months to give enough growth for the ladder fuels like weeds and dry brush. The drought has caused a heightened alert for the fire service.”

Gov. Jerry Brown declared May 3 through May 9 Wildfire Awareness Week for the state.

The county Fire Department put together “Ready, Set, Go! Personal Wildfire Action Plan,” which includes tips and tricks to prepare residents’ homes and families in the event of a wildfire.

Tips include:

• Creating a firebreak by clearing weeds and dry grass at least 100 feet around a home.

• Keep propane tanks clear of vegetation

• Keep all firewood, lawn furniture, picnic tables and other combustibles away from structures

• Dispose of stove or fireplace ash and charcoal briquettes after soaking them in a metal pail of water for 24 hours

• Keep a garden hose connected to a faucet

• Review home escape plan with family and have a fire drill

• Ensure address is clearly visible from the street
