Two cars driving recklessly Sunday evening on Sherman Way in Van Nuys triggered a five-vehicle crash that critically injured one person, the Los Angeles Police Department said Monday.

The crash happened about 7:15 p.m. in the 16000 block of Sherman Way and involved three vehicles and two that were parked.

“This is going to be an ongoing investigation and we are working on collecting evidence,” said Sgt. Marti Whittenmore of the Valley Traffic Division. “This is not classified as a street race, just two vehicles following each other.”

In addition to the critically injured person, three others were taken to local hospitals.
