ULM travels to Nicholls in final midweek

Something funny happened after ULM dropped a road Sun Belt series to Georgia Southern.

Despite going 1-2 on the weekend, the Warhawks (21-23, 8-13) actually moved up in the overall conference standings.

ULM moved to the vaulted eighth spot in the Sun Belt, tied with UT-Arlington. But if the season ended today, ULM would be the team in the conference tournament due to a tiebreaker.

The Warhawks have three conference series left to secure that spot, but first they’ll close midweek portion of the schedule at Nicholls State.

The Colonels (24-16-1) beat ULM 3-2 in Monroe in extra innings on April 8; a game Warhawk fans will remember by a controversial call at the plate that gave Nicholls the go-ahead run in the top of the 10.

Cole Hendrix got the start and went five innings before Brandon Bell finished the game and picked up the loss. After leading 1-0, ULM fell behind by a run but went on tie it up in seventh inning.

ULM had two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the 10 but left them on in a game where the Warhawks had as many hits as stranded runners (10).

Payton Coddou and Brayden Bouchey started both midweek outings last week against Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech — both losses.

ULM dropped both opening games—and the series—to Georgia Southern in a Friday doubleheader. The Warhawks came back Sunday riding a four-game losing streak and ended it in an 11-1 win over the Eagles.

Justin Stawychny went 2-for-5 in the game three win and tied a career-high with five RBIs. Danny Springer led ULM with three hits and was one of three Warhawks to come up with an RBI along with Stawychny and Spencer Hemphill.

Keegan Curtis (3-0) made the start after being doubtful with a foot injury and picked up the win.

Nicholls is one of four teams in the Southland Conference with 24 wins or more. First pitch from Thibodaux is set for 6 p.m.
