Girl With Rare Ureter Anomaly Undergoes Successful Surgery in Chennai

A 12-year-old girl, suffering from a rare congenital anomaly was treated successfully at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) in Chennai.

She had complaints of urinary incontinence and abstained from school due to continuous leaking of urine and her education was affected.

Ureteroscopy is an endoscopic procedure that clears stones from the ureter or the kidney.

Doctors of urology department at RGGGH diagnosed her. A CT scan and an MRI revealed that she had a rare birth defect. She had two ureters from the left kidney. One of her ureters opened to her genital organ, while the other connected normally to the urinary bladder.

Dr. Selvaraj from the urology department at RGGGH, said, "There have been cases of two ureters from the same kidney connecting to the bladder, but not one in the bladder and the other in the genital.”

A five-member team of doctors performed a surgery on the girl, where they divided the abnormal ureter. One end of it was connected to the upper portion of the regular ureter and the other end was tied up.

Doctors at RGGGH performed the surgery free of cost under the chief minister’s comprehensive health insurance scheme.
