The IAAF announced on Thursday morning that Eugene would be the host for the 2021 Outdoor World Championships. The host will be the University of Oregon and Historic Hayward Field. It will be the first time the event will be held on American soil and it will be a nice feather in the cap for Tracktown USA. Hayward Field and the Tracktown crowd are familiar with big events including the 2012 Olympic Trials and the 2008 Trials being held in Eugene and the annual Prefontaine Classic happening next month.

The 2021 event will be the third IAAF event  in a seven year span to be held in the State of Oregon. According to USA Track and Field,  a biennial nine-day competition featuring the world’s finest track and field athletes – will be the largest sporting event in the world in 2021, with nearly 2,000 participants representing as many as 213 different countries from around the world.

In 2015 the NCAA Track and Field Championships return to Hayward Field in June and next year Hayward will again host the Olympic Trials. The 2021 event will be special for another reason. In 1919 Hayward Field was built for football, two years later in 1921 the oval track was installed which will make it the one-hundredth anniversary of Hayward for the sport.

"“We are thrilled to be able to welcome the world in 2021. We want to thank the IAAF for their decision, and we also want to thank the people of Oregon for their unwavering support. In hosting this meet at historic Hayward Field, on the beautiful University of Oregon campus, we believe we can ignite a spark that will leave a lasting legacy for track and field for generations to come.”Tracktown USA President Vin Lananna"
