Turning yourself into a "Star Wars" Stormtrooper in less than an hour using cardboard boxes is a bit of a challenge.

But it's the kind of fun participants might encounter at Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton on April 24 when the sculpture park hosts a free Friday night party that can encourage a creative spin on recycling.

Artist Oliver Herring will be leading a TASK party at the park's International Sculpture Center to help inaugurate International Sculpture Day. Herring's goal in starting the parties in 2002 was to encourage both creativity and social interaction among participants of various ages and backgrounds.

"This is art and not just a party," Herring, a German native based in Brooklyn, has said. Participants think up and write down sometimes zany tasks (Hide in a box to jump out to scare people) and then assign or enlist others to complete them. The artistry comes with the challenge of using everyday materials to build experiential sculpture.

Participants can match the mood to their tasks with the help of a DJ who can be tapped to play suitable music. The party, which runs from 6 to 10 p.m., is appropriate for children, families, couples and singles of all ages. Grounds for Sculpture is at 126 Sculptors Way.
