2 from area make Class 3A All-State

Two area Class 3A boys basketball players are among those honored as All-State performers by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Rayville senior Jamarion Johnson (18.3 ppg, 12.3 rpg) is a first-team selection and Carroll sophomore Larry Owens (18 ppg, 12 rpg) is a second-team choice.

University Lab, winning its second consecutive Class 3A state championships in both girls and boys basketball, dominated the Class 3A All-State teams.

University’s Wayde Sims, a junior foward, was named the boys Outstanding Player after a season where he averaged 17.6 points and 9.5 rebounds as well as being named the title-game MVP for a second time. But, it was St. Louis head coach Rick LeBato who was named the 3A boys Coach of the Year after guiding the Saints to its first Top 28 appearance since 1998.

Runner-up Mansfield swept the top awards on the girls squad with senior guard Ashlyn Jacobs being named Outstanding Player and coach Kendra Neal being named Coach of the Year. Jacobs averaged 20.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists.

Sims is joined on the boys first team by junior Skylar Mays (9.1 ppg, 8.1 apg), a University teammate, Port Allen senior Ishmael Lane (19 ppg, 12 rpg, 6 bpg), ) and John Curtis senior Kai Morgan (20.9 ppg).

The second-team features St. Louis senior Christian Fontenot (18.9 ppg), Donaldsonville junior Braxton Bernard (24.6 ppg), Evangel senior Calvin Daniels (18 ppg) and John Curtis senior Richard Durant (15.7 ppg).

Jacobs is joined on the first team by Jewel Sumner junior Bre’Ashlee Jones (15 ppg, 10 rpg, 8 apg), Ville Platte senior Deja McKinney (24.3 ppg), University junior Destiny Ephrom (14.2 ppg) and South Beauregard sophomore Sissy Saucier (16.9 ppg, 7.2 rpg).

The second team includes John Curtis freshman Dynah Jones (14 ppg), E.D. White sophomore Michae Jones (13.6 ppg), Jewel Sumner sophomore Diamond Brooks (15 ppg, 10 rpg), Notre Dame senior Madelyn LeJeune (18.9 ppg) and Evangel senior Rachel Johnson (16 ppg).
