HEVC Advance has launched a new patent pool for the licensing and commercialisation of HEVC technologies.
The HEVC patent pool plans to address demand for an additional licensing option of HEVC essential patents. It’s anticipated more than 500 essential patents expected to be available for license at launch, with the number of patents expected to grow significantly.
“The digital media market stands at a pivotal point as innovations like HEVC enable rich next-generation experiences while helping solve industry limitations with delivering that experience,” said HEVC Advance’s Peter Moller. “The market is requiring a different approach to aggregating and making HEVC essential patents available for license. We invite other HEVC patent holders to join the HEVC Advance pool.”
HEVC technology is appealing to providers of OTT (over the top) content and mobile video. However, there is also interest from broadcast, satellite and cable providers.
Initial licensors are expected to include GE, Technicolor, Dolby, Philips and Mitsubishi Electric. Royalty rates and licensing terms will be made available in the second quarter. The HEVC Advance
patent pool will formally launch in the third quarter of 2015.
