An accused sex offender who who fought with a deputy and injured him was still on the loose Monday morning, nearly three days after he fled the hospital, where he was in jail custody.

Santa Clara County Sheriff's Sgt. Jim Jenson said Johnell Carter, 40, escaped from the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, where he was taken for treatment on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and was being supervised by a deputy.

No more details were released on the struggle, or why Carter was in the hospital.

Jensen said Carter was in custody after being arrested in in March 2014 on suspicion of five counts of child molestation.

Authorities had searched an apartment in San Jose over the weekend, and found items inside an apartment that showed he had been in the house, but the search was called off when deputies couldn't find him. Police from several agencies had searched several other areas as well, to no avail.

Deputies consider him armed and dangerous.

While it was initially thought that a tattoo on the left side of Carter's neck said "Alice," deputies now said the tattoo reads "AMY." Carter also has "Johnell Jr." tattooed to his left upper arm and has a mole on the left side of his chin, according to deputies.

Carter is also described as 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing 220 pounds with a shaved head.
