ULM’s Alex Hermeling pitches way to Sun Belt honor

University News Services

NEW ORLEANS After tossing the first complete game shutout in nearly three years, ULM’s Alex Hermeling has been named the Sun Belt Conference’s Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced today.

Hermeling limited Sam Houston State to just seven base runners (four singles, two walks and one hit batter) in the 6-0 shutout. The right-hander struck out four batters and needed just 99 pitches (69 for strikes) to blank the Bearkats.

During the course of his nine innings of work, he recorded four perfect frames and just two Sam Houston State baserunners were able to reach scoring position (one in seventh, one in eighth).

His complete game shutout was the first since Shelby Aulds vs. Middle Tennessee (Apr. 21, 2012) and it marked his second career complete game (vs. Western Kentucky, Sun Belt Tournament, May 22, 2014).

With the nine shutout frames, Hermeling’s scoreless streak now sits at 17 consecutive innings (eight vs. Stephen F. Austin; nine vs. Sam Houston State).
