ULM women fall at Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. – The ULM women’s basketball team lost 80-61 at Appalachian State on Saturday despite Alayshia Hunter reaching double figures in rebounds for the second game in a row.

Hunter grabbed a game-high 12 boards to lead the Warhawks (11-16, 7-11 SBC). She also had nine points.

Olivia Countiss garnered 12 points and two rebounds, while Daja Chase chipped in eight points and eight rebounds.

Sydnor Maryah led Appalachian State (13-14, 8-10 SBC) with 18 points.

Sydnor hit a free throw to take the early lead for the Mountaineers, but Sharnice Brooks put gave the home team a 2-1 advantage with 18:10 left in the first half.

The Warhawks used a 10-0 run, highlighted by five points from Hunter, to take a 17-7 lead with 10:47 left before the break.

Appalachian State then went on an 8-2 spurt of its own to cut ULM’s advantage to four, but their run was cut off when Countiss sank one from beyond the arc for a 22-15 Warhawk lead with 5:57 remaining in the half.

The Mountaineers had another run to take a one point lead. After the home team stretched the advantage to three, Aundrea Davis nailed two free throws to for a 32-31 score in favor of the Mountaineers as the teams headed into the locker room.

Appalachian State had a 12-3 stretch to open the second half, but Chelsea Tieuel hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead back to single digits, 44-37, with 15:15 left in the game.

The home team extended the lead back to double-digits once again as they captured the victory over the Warhawks.

ULM will return home on Thursday as they host Georgia State at 5:15 p.m. in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
