Lawmakers Push for Release of Secret 9/11 Documents

February 26, 2015 | Michael Barasch

Recently congressional lawmakers have been increasing pressure on the Obama administration to release secret documents related to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. There are allegedly 28 top-secret pages from a 9/11 report that have been marked classified for years. Much of the information in these pages supposedly relates to Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the attacks.

For years, advocacy grounds and legislators have been pushing for the release of these documents. Unlike many political issues, this has enjoyed bipartisan support as both House Republicans and Democrats have argued that the pages should be declassified. Recently, retired Florida Democrat Sen. Bob Graham has joined the effort. He is the former Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman and many are hopeful that his support will convince President Obama to release these pages.

Walter Jones, a Republican representative from North Carolina has worked with Democratic Rep. Stephen Lynch from Massachusetts in campaigning for the declassification of these top-secret pages. They are among the few Congress members who have actually read the report and believe the public has a right to the information, which Jones has described as “shocking.” They have suggested that the report implicates the Saudi government and have alleged that the government’s refusal to release the pages stems from a desire to cover for The United States’ wealthy ally in the Middle East.

While they have hinted at the contents of the pages, neither lawmaker will reveal the exact details of them. However, they have gone on record saying that the release of the documents would fundamentally change foreign policy and national security.

Even though it has been 14 years since 9/11, we are still suffering the consequences of this deadly attack. If you believe you were harmed due to exposure at the World Trade Center, contact the dedicated New York injury attorneys at Barasch, McGarry Salzman & Penson to learn your legal right.
