Mike Shanahan says RG3 can still be a franchise quarterback, but only if he puts in the work

The Redskins fired Mike Shanahan nearly one year ago after the three-time Super Bowl champion went 24-40 in four seasons as a head coach. Shanahan’s Redskins managed a seven-game win streak in 2012 to sneak into the playoffs, but the Redskins seemingly still haven’t recovered from Robert Griffin’s knee injury against the Seahawks that year. Although Washington derailed the Eagles’ playoff hopes with a win at home Saturday, the Redskins are 4-11 and no one in Washington knows whether or not Robert Griffin III can still be a franchise quarterback.

Shanahan, for what it’s worth, still believes in RG3. In an appearance on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown, Shanahan said he believes Griffin can be “as good as he wants to be.”

Via The Washington Times:

“It takes a lot of work, a lot of studying. He’s going from a system where there’s a lot of play-action, a lot of screens out of college. [We] utilized a lot of those plays his rookie year, and then with injuries and adopting a new system, there’s a process that’s involved. I think he can be as good as he wants to be, but he has got to make a commitment there in that film room like he’s never done before.”

Chris Berman also asked Shanahan if he’s looking to return to coaching next season. Shanahan, who has won 170 games as a head coach (placing him 11th on the all-time list), said he’s waiting for an opportunity with the “right organization.”

“Well, the one thing that I want to do is win, and so it’s not just coaching, but going to the right organization that will make a strong commitment. There’s only one team that’s happy at the end of the year, and that’s the team that wins the Super Bowl.”
