Until now several have tried, and unfortunately failed at their attempt. There was Joey Harrington, Dennis Dixon and several in between. There was LaMichael James who finished third in voting just a few years ago, but with Oregon Ducks Quarterback Marcus Mariota, Oregon and its Football Program have the first Heisman Trophy winner in program history.

On Saturday night in New York City sitting with Alabama Wide Receiver Amari Cooper and Wisconsin Running Back Melvin Gordon there was Mariota. He was calm and collected. He appeared poised. After an hour of pomp and circumstance he was announced as the winner of the 2014 Heisman Trophy. Mariota won the Trophy by one of the biggest margins ever.

Mariota was named on over ninety-five percent of all ballots and received over ninety percent of all possible points.

The University of Oregon created a website to honor Mariota and the Occasion with MahaloMarcus.com

The reigning Heisman Trophy Winner will face a former winner on New Year’s Day in Florida State Quarterback Jameis Winston who won the award last year. This season Winston did not make it to the ceremony as a finalist. He was invited back as a previous winner but declined. Oregon and Florida State take the field in the College Football Playoff Semi Final on January 1st. (2pm Pacific Time, ESPN)
