Sports Illustrated ‘People’s Vote for Heisman’ Has Cooper Edging Mariota

Today is one of the biggest days in College Football for post season awards. It is the day we find out who will win the Heisman Trophy. On Friday Sports Illustrated announced the results of the ‘People’s Poll’ for the Heisman and there was a surprise. The one name everyone expects to win, Oregon Duckd Quarterback Marcus Mariota, came in second to Alabama Wide Receiver Amari Cooper by a slim margin. I highly doubt that this will be what happens on Saturday night in New York.

Sports Illustrated used the same formula that the trustees use for the actual poll and Mariota had a large amount of third place votes. The poll has correctly picked the last three Heisman Trophy winners, but this year will not be correct. According to the article Cooper’s victory was close as he earned just over forty-four  percent of the total ‘votes’. On Saturday night the margin is not expected to be that close.

When it comes to playing College Football it is good to have a solid Wide Receiver and a solid Running Back, however the Quarterback is your field general and when you have one as talented as Marcus Mariota who has thrown for thirty-eight passing touchdowns and accounted for over thirty-seven hundred yards this season there is no doubt who will come away with the hardware Saturday night.

Mariota has already swept the College Football Awards winning the Walter Camp Player of the Year, the Maxwell Award and the Davey O’Brien Award, given to the Nation’s Best Quarterback. The bigger question tonight should be not if Mariota wins, but how big will the margin of victory be?

The Heisman Trophy Ceremony is set for 5pm Pacific Time on ESPN.
