SNOHOMISH — Collin Kane scored 12 of his 18 points in the second quarter to help the Snohomish Panthers earn their first victory of the season, a 54-44 win over Cascade in boys basketball action.
The game was the Wesco 4A opener for both teams.
Trailing by two after the first quarter, the Panthers outscored the Bruins 20-7 in the second period to take a 31-20 lead by halftime.
“That was a huge quarter, largely because we got the ball to Collin Kane,” Snohomish head coach Len Bone said.
The Bruins cut the lead to four with two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but a steal and layup by Zak Carlson, who finished with 11 points, and timely free throw shooting helped the Panthers end their three-game losing streak.
“It’s nice always to get your first win,” Bone said. “We are going to end up playing Cascade a couple more times this year and they are a good team. They’re going to get better and so are we, and so are the other teams in this league, so we got to keep working at it.”
Making his first appearance of the season — and first of his career — Gus Baxter scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Snohomish. Baxter is also a member of the soccer team and decided over the summer he would try basketball.
“He gave us a good lift,” Bone said. “He is a good athlete and I’m glad he turned out.”
Brevin Brown scored 18 points and Isaiah Gotell added 10 for the Bruins (0-1 league, 1-3 overall).
