City meets with Australian wildlife reps in wake of Jasper's death
Tasmanian devil found dead in October
Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry and wildlife representatives from Australia met Tuesday to talk about the death of an endangered Tasmanian devil.
The animal, Jasper, was found dead in his enclosure at the Albuquerque BioPark Zoo in October.
Berry said the relationship between the city and Australia remains strong, even with Jasper’s killing. Police said someone threw a piece of asphalt into the exhibit, killing the animal.
Jasper’s death launched a police and separate independent investigation, but no arrests have been made.
Berry plans to talk to the police chief tomorrow to get an update about Jasper’s death investigation. The zoo said the meeting with Australian representatives had been planned prior to Jasper’s death. The meeting dealt with a possible expansion of the zoo's Australian exhibit.
