FEDERAL WAY — Marysville Getchell diver Brooke Wherley was the top local qualifier Friday during the first day of competition at the 4A/3A/2A State Girls Swimming and Diving Championships.
The finals are Saturday at the King County Aquatics Center.
Wherley, who is seeking the first state championship in Marysville Getchell history, posted the top score in the Class 3A diving prelims, with a mark of 191.10. Annika Dayton of Glacier Peak was second at 182.70.
Wherley also placed first in the semifinals, with a score of 309.05. Hannah Walsh of Bellingham was second (295.70) and Dayton third (279.30).
Meanwhile, Jackson sophomores Nicole Limberg and Madison Pressler eached advanced to the finals in two individual events. Pressler qualified in the 200 freestyle (third, 1:56.04) and the 100 backstroke (eighth, 1:00.35). She is the defending 4A state champion in the 200 freestyle.
Limberg will swim in today’s finals in the 200 individual medley (third, 2:09.15) and the 100 breaststroke (second, 1:05.43).
Other Snohomish County athletes who qualified for two Class 4A finals included Brianna Lucien of Mariner, who will compete in the 200 freestyle (fourth, 1:56.12) and the 500 freestyle (second, 5:04.03), and Gabby Marlatt of Lake Stevens, who advanced to the finals in the 50 freestyle (eighth, 24.93) and 100 freestyle (seventh, 54.57).
In the 3A meet, Karlie Rimat of Stanwood and Luci Brock of Edmonds-Woodway each qualified for two finals. Rimat will swim in the 500 freestyle (fourth, 5:08.95) and the 200 IM (fifth, 2:11.62). Brock will be in the 200 IM (third, 2:09.16) and the 100 butterfly (fifth, 59.21).
In the 2A meet, Archbishop Murphy quaified all three of its relay teams for the finals. In addition, the Wildcats’ Kaelee McCloskey and Danielle Booth each advanced to the finals in two individual events — McCloskey in the 200 IM (seventh, 2:16.65) and the 100 butterfly (sixth, 1:01.91), and Booth in the 50 freestyle (third, 25.02) and the 100 breaststroke (fourth, 1:09.17).
Saturday’s 3A championships begin at 10 a.m., followed by the 4A finals at 2:30 p.m. and the 2A finals at 6:30 p.m.
