Prince Amukamara out for season

New York Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his biceps in Monday night's loss to the Indianapolis Colts, coach Tom Coughlin confirmed Tuesday.

"We won't have him going forward," Coughlin said on a conference call. "We have to move on."

It's another rough blow for a Giants secondary that's already lost nickel corners Walter Thurmond and Trumaine McBride to season-ending injuries and has had to shuffle a severely limited Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in and out of the lineup for more than a month.

Amukamara was having a very strong season, and his three interceptions this season matched his career total from his first three years in the league.

"Most likely will have surgery. Torn bicep," he said in a text message to ESPN.com. "Frustrated/disappointed because of how we the team are doing this year and to get hurt on top of that makes it worse. Also because I had personal goals I wanted to reach and I felt like I was on the rise of reaching them. So to get hurt while I was having my best year yet is tough.

"However when you play a very physical sport a high level injuries are going to come."

His injury leaves the Giants with Rodgers-Cromartie, Zack Bowman, Chandler Fenner, Jayron Hosley and newly signed Mike Harris at cornerback.

Coughlin indicated the Giants could add someone else this week, but he also said they're going to have to make some coaching and scheme adjustments to deal with the gutting of a position group that was as deep and strong as any they had when the season began.

"We've certainly got to analyze and examine that going forward," Coughlin said. "We're going to have to spend a lot of time bringing these new people to a point where they understand the basic concepts from which we coach and then the adjustments you make going forward into a game.

"I'm sure we're going to have to be very selective, perhaps taper a little bit with the broadness of the plan. But we'll work with that this afternoon and this evening and first of all square up with what personnel will be playing and what they can handle."

In other injury news, left guard Weston Richburg, who left the game with an ankle injury, was having tests Tuesday, and the extent of his injury is unknown. Coughlin did not sound concerned that wide receiver Preston Parker's ankle injury was serious.

Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, who missed Saturday's practice and came out of Monday's game briefly with a shoulder injury, is someone whose health status the Giants will monitor more closely this week. Coughlin said he didn't know whether it was the same shoulder that was a season-ending problem for Pierre-Paul last year.

"We felt it was something that was very controllable, so we didn't think a whole lot about it," Coughlin said of the recent shoulder flare-up. "So now perhaps there will be more emphasis along those lines."

The Giants travel to Seattle this weekend for a Sunday game against the Super Bowl champion Seahawks.
