The voice of Native Americans will be amplified at UCLA Film and Television Archive’s series, “Through Indian Eyes: Native American Cinema,” from Oct. 24-Dec. 15.
Cultures, issues and viewpoints from various tribes in Canada and the United States are explored by Native American filmmakers through animation, documentaries, features and shorts.
There’s a good mix of subject matter in the series including an Inuit legend (“Atanarjuat, the Fast Runner”); how a language was resurrected from only written pages (“Miami Awakening”); a drama about sisters starting a cosmetics business (“Naturally Native”) and a selection of children’s shorts.
The series will also screen “White Fawn’s Devotion” on Nov. 12. The 1910 film is directed by James Young Deer, who is thought to be the first Native American director. On the same night, movie fans can catch “The Daughter of Dawn” (1920), cast entirely with Comanche and Kiowa, and the one minute “Buffalo Dance” (1894) that expert believe to be the debut of Native Americans in motion pictures.
Two movies that were Sundance Film Festival selections, “Miss Navajo” (2007, documentary) and “Drunktown’s Finest” (2014), will be screened on Oct. 24. Filmmakers from both movies, Sydney Freeland and Billy Luther, are scheduled to attend.
