Kaiser Permanente Plans to Better Serve Tri-Valley With New Dublin Facility

If approved by the Board of Directors construction could begin as early as 2016.

Kaiser Permanente is pleased to announce a major and long-anticipated expansion of health-care services in the Tri-Valley area of Alameda County.

The Tri-Valley is an attractive and inviting place to live. It has seen steady population growth – and steady growth in Kaiser Permanente membership – in the nearly 10 years since we bought a 58-acre parcel in Dublin with future expansion of health-care services in mind. We have been part of the Tri-Valley community for decades, and we are proud to be speaking now with the City of Dublin about short- and long-range plans for expansion of our services to our nearly 125,000 members in the Tri-Valley.

“This is a big step forward for both Kaiser Permanente and the Dublin community,” said Colleen McKeown, Senior Vice President and Area Manager for Kaiser Permanente’s Diablo Service Area. “A key part of our mission is to provide high-quality affordable health care to our members and the communities we serve, and this expansion is a testament to that commitment in the Tri-Valley.”

A phased development of the property is envisioned that could extend through 2040, starting with a medical office building that would offer some types of specialty outpatient care that Kaiser Permanente members in the area now travel to Walnut Creek to receive.

The initial phase of the plan calls for a 170,000-square-foot medical office building and a 30,000-square-foot radiation/oncology center. In addition to specialty care, the medical office building may include an urgent-care clinic, outpatient surgery, surgical specialties and other services including pharmacy, laboratory and health education. Development of this project is contingent upon approval by our Board of Directors, and if that is forthcoming, construction of this phase could begin as early as 2016.

The plan for the site leaves room for further construction and expansion of services, depending on future demand. The delivery of health care is rapidly evolving, and is expected to continue that trend in coming years, so it is difficult to say what form that expansion would take, or when development would begin. Again, development would be contingent upon approval by our Board of Directors, as well as continued membership growth in the area and community need.

“This is an exciting opportunity for us to expand our services in this growing area,” said Ken Grullon, MD, Co-Physician in Chief for Kaiser Permanente’s Diablo Service Area. “Kaiser Permanente is the national leader in delivering care that is coordinated, personalized and technologically advanced. Our plans in the Tri-Valley leave us room to grow, and to continue to lead as health care and the practice of medicine advance and evolve.”

The health-care portion of the development would occur on 35 to 40 acres of the site. The remainder of the parcel is being reserved for future commercial and/or health care-related uses, and development of this portion is anticipated between 2016 and 2020.
