Description:

The Department of Linguistics at Stockholm University, Sweden invites applications for a four-year studentship within its Ph.D. programme in Linguistics with a specialization in Sign Language, starting January 1, 2015.

The area of the dissertation includes but is not limited to the research areas of the Section for Sign Language: Signed Language Corpora, Lexicography, cross-linguistic study of Signed Languages, Acquisition of L2 SL Learners, Tactile Sign Language, and Deaf Children's Language Acquisition.

Requirements:
The basic eligibility requirements stipulates that the candidate has a completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 must be in second-cycle courses, or possess a second-cycle degree, a corresponding degree from outside Sweden or corresponding qualifications. Specific entry requirements within Sign Language stipulates that at least 30 of the 60 ECTS credits on the second cycle level should be within Sign Language and should include a degree project for a one year Master's degree (Swedish "Magister"). Naturally, applicants with a two years Master's degree and degree project in Sign Language are also eligible.

Among qualified applicants, selection is made according to the ability to profit from the studies. The criteria to be used are properly documented competence within Sign Language, analytical thinking, creativity, initiative, independence, and team work performance. Experience of work on Swedish Sign language and/or corpora is an advantage. The research plan is evaluated with regard to relevance, originality and feasibility. The applicant's earlier experience within the field of research can be of relevance especially when further documented by university courses, independent research works and personal references.
