Encounters Film Festival
The Watershed in Bristol is currently
hosting the 20th anniversary annual short film festival. This year, the event is a combination of
short films, short animations, industry workshops, film art exhibitions, and
political debate with an overall theme of retrospectives and reflection on film
culture. Three cinema screens and three
workshop rooms are host to hundreds of films, discussions and masterclasses.
The programme is too rich and diverse to
summarise (obviously), and there are a huge amount of intriguing short films
but there are also a number of interactive sessions over the next few days on
the schedule that are worth highlighting:

National Film and Television School (NFTS)
director Nik Powell is giving a speech about the role of film festivals in the
past and into the future and the impact of digital technology on short films.
Meet
the programmers: Raiders of the new ark
Thursday 13:30-14:30 Waterside 3
A panel of programmers from across
Europe host a discussion about what filmmakers should hope for when attending a
film festival and what influence this can have on their roles.

Masterclass with Dean Humphries

designer Dean Humphries (Taken 2, The
Pianist, Donnie Brasco) leads a workshop on how dialogue, music and sound
effects have an impact on the final soundtrack

Specialist sound effects and sound
editor Steve Browell talks about his craft and his career – including his work
on Under The Skin, On The Road, and My Week With Marilyn.
