Watch Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ DUMBO Movie Shoot

Steven Spielberg’s Cold War movie – now titled St. James Place – starring Tom Hanks, transformed the Anchorage Place area in DUMBO into the 1960s this weekend. Gothamist posted some great photos yesterday and many residents took to social media today to document the action. The film is scheduled to be released in October 2015. Filming in DUMBO ends Monday.

    Not for nothing, but did anyone do any research on the graphic sign content? If this is supposed to be in 1962 the advertising signs should have had phone numbers with exchanges i.e. MH 7-7500. In the 1960’s there were no telephone numbers that would have read 537-7500. The other mistake are the galvanized steel gates, the so-called “Lindsey gates” they came later They weren’t around in the early 60’s. Also the spray can painted graffiti came later.
    Geeze, what a simple thing it would have been to actually have looked at an old sign for reference or ask someone who might have known.

    Actually – numeric dialing started in 1958 so it’s technically accurate but growing up here later than that I remember using alphanumeric well into the Brady Bunch era.

    You are right about all number dialing going on into the 70s. If you check out any NY newspaper ad from the early to mid 60s you won’t see a single one without a letter exchange phone number.

    I remember a lot of grumbling from people who didn’t like the idea of not being able to see the letter exchange and thereby did not know in which neighborhood the person or business was located. I personally thought the alpha numbers were easier to remember back then, but speed dialing makes remembering phone numbers unnecessary.
